Maximizing Ramadan Productivity with OKRs: A Guide for Families

Ramadan, for Muslims, serves as a conducive month for worship and strengthening family and social ties. Additionally, the rewards for worship during this month are multiplied. As a result, Ramadan is an opportune time for many individuals to engage in acts of kindness and strive towards personal and collective goals.

Given that Ramadan lasts for only a month each year, individuals must maximize their time to achieve their goals. One strategy for doing so is to set Ramadan targets, which can be accomplished through the use of Objective Key Results (OKR). OKR is a tool that has been proven effective for target setting in large companies worldwide, including Google, LinkedIn, and Intel.

Although some may question the application of OKR to personal and family settings, OKR’s bottom-up principle allows for the alignment of personal and organizational goals. Consequently, OKR can be used to align the personal goals of each family member with the larger goals of the family during Ramadan. Incorporating OKR into family activities can also promote stronger family ties and encourage members to set targets together. Therefore, Ramadan can serve as a training ground for adopting clear targets while maximizing worship during this holy month.

To set family Ramadan OKRs, the first step is to identify the obligatory and recommended worship activities during Ramadan. Next, select several worship targets to focus on, taking into account family members’ opinions and the specific frequency or amount of each target.

The second step involves creating a Ramadan objective, which should be an inspirational goal that motivates both individuals and family members. An ambitious but achievable big goal should be established, motivating individuals to strive towards its accomplishment. Competitive but cooperative family members who remind each other of their objectives can create a positive atmosphere within the family. For example, one could set the following objectives for Ramadan: “To become a devout Muslim family during Ramadan 1444H”, “To improve health and fitness during Ramadan 1444H”, or “To become a Muslim family with social piety during Ramadan 1444H.”

In the third step, key results should be established for each objective, consisting of 3–5 measurable, specific, and time-oriented results. A short meeting with all family members can be held to determine their desired key results. The following examples illustrate possible key results:

Ramadan Objective 1: To foster devoutness within the family during Ramadan 1444H
Key Results:
Reading 3 juz of the Quran per day
Attending 8 offline religious studies during Ramadan
Performing Tahajud prayer for 30 days
Memorizing 10 surahs from juz 29–30

Ramadan Objective 2: To enhance health and fitness during Ramadan 1444H
Key Results:
Increasing daily step count to 10,000 steps during the second month of Ramadan
Sleeping at least 7 hours per night during Ramadan
Losing at least 2 kilograms of weight during Ramadan

Ramadan Objective 3: To promote social piety within the family during Ramadan 1444H
Key Results:
Donating a total of 100 million to charity
Participating in 3 social projects during Ramadan
Attending or sharing events 5 times during Ramadan

In the fourth step, upon agreeing on the objectives and key results, it is indicative that the family is prepared to execute the OKRs during Ramadan. Nonetheless, it is acknowledged that the ardor to realize the targets may wane midway. Therefore, the evaluation of Ramadan OKRs is necessary. Weekly evaluation of Ramadan OKRs is recommended, and this assessment moment can be supplemented with sharing activities amongst family members.

Multiple methods can be employed to appraise the attainment of OKRs. Some common methods include measuring key results using numerical values or percentages, holding review meetings where family members present their progress towards established OKRs, and providing feedback and reflections on the achievements. The feedback should be specific and constructive, particularly related to the Key Results that were achieved or not achieved.

It is an appealing option to create measurable common goals for the Ramadan period. OKRs are among the potent and comprehensible tools that facilitate setting and realizing targets, enabling families to maximize the Ramadan momentum and worship with their beloved members.
